I am now in my third year in one of the most enjoyable jobs I have ever had, that of Museum Director of the Submarine Force Library & Museum and Officer in Charge of Historic Ship Nautilus. We are looking forward to a great year at the museum in 2010 and hope you all will come visit the museum. Our education specialist, Liz Murphy has been on board for one year and the growth of the education outreach program under her leadership has been absolutely phenomenal. With her background in elementary education she has a real knack for figuring out how to make submarines fun, interesting and understandable for our younger museum visitors.
We opened a temporary exhibit chronicling the history of Submarine NR- 1 last fall. This exhibit provides a bridge and a temporary reminder of the importance of that tiny submarine while we continue efforts to obtain the submarine as a permanent exhibit at the Submarine Force Library & Museum. We have obtained the sail, fairwater planes, propellers and upper rudder which will be put into an outdoor exhibit hopefully later this year.
We also continue efforts to obtain DSRV Mystic as a permanent exhibit at the museum. We are awaiting final approval from the Navy and still have to work out transportation details to move Mystic from Southern California to the east coast; more to follow on that at a future date. In the interim, we are planning a temporary exhibit to be installed later this year.
